Realism....The Civil War opened the eyes of the American public that there were true issues in our country. The overly optimistic philosophy of the Romantics was considered to be an ineffective way to view the world because one needed realistic expectations to see the world as it truly was.
Realists want to show how life was actually lived. The struggles, the joys, the good times, the bad times. This is what life is. Realist writers wanted to showcase how the everyday man and woman lived their lives. Regionalism was a branch of Realism. The only difference is a Regionalist writer focused on one region. The plot and characters always reflected the language and culture of that region. |
